Bermuda holidays - love exotic!
Bermuda has been long recognized as a great holiday destination. Many people come from far and wide to enjoy lazing on our beaches, playing the beautifully manicured eight public and private golf courses dotted across the island, and sailing or swimming in the azure blue waters of the Atlantic. It goes without saying that the people of Bermuda tend to enjoy their holidays, too, especially those nine legal public holidays when they may not necessarily leave the island, but participate in many activities that will be of interest to visitors. These include the six public holidays celebrated almost everywhere ~ New Year's Day, Good Friday, Labour Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day ~ plus a few others... Bermuda Day (May 24) is considered the first day of summer and usually to first day of the year to jump in the ocean! There is a parade in Hamilton where locals and visitors line the streets in celebration; the first Bermuda Fitted Dinghy race of the season with the first "raft ups" of the season! The party is on! The Queen's (official) Birthday is celebrated in mid-June with a great military parade on Front Street. Emancipation Day is on August 2nd, and the next day, August 3rd, is set aside as Somers (Sir George, of course) Day on July 30. On these two days the island literally closes down for the Annual Cup Match Classic, a cricket match between the Somerset Cricket Club and St. George's Cricket Club. This year's Match will be in St. George's. On public holidays and on Saturdays and Sundays, Government offices, banks and offices close. Buses and ferries run on limited schedules. However, all sightseeing attractions, cycle liveries, most restaurants and a variety of sporting activities are available. Year round, most shops are closed on Sundays; however, most grocery stores are open in the afternoon.
